The Sitepoint Marketplace

This site used to (see below) focus primarily on the activities currently taking place in Sitepoint's marketplace. It is here that more than $1.2m worth of websites are traded every month, as this Guardian article testifies. It's a busy place. Owners of websites create auctions in order to sell them. Each auction has the following characteristics:

  • details about the site being sold are displayed. These details include interesting things like how many visitors the site gets a month, when the site was established, earnings history, and so on.
  • potential buyers can ask questions of the seller, who can supply further information that the buyer is interested in. This question/response dislogue is visible for other interested parties to see, in the auction comments.
  • interested buyers can make bids on the site being sold.
  • the auction runs for a period of time, set by the seller when the auction was created, and if a satisfactory bid is made, the site is sold.

There are some fine sites to be bought in Sitepoint's marketplace. There are also some real howlers. There are shrewd sellers who value their websites intelligently. Unfortunately there are also sellers who are clueless when it comes to business and put ridiculously high valuations on their sites. Spoiling their auctions by trying to get them to listen to reason is a little childish. Creating a whole website whose sole purpose is to allow me to vent my spleen is a little less childish. So that's the option I took.

Learn How To Buy And Sell Websites

(see above) I say used to because I found that a lot of people feel a little lost when it comes to buying and selling websites, and feel particularly paddle-less when they need to assess a website with a view to buying it. With this in mind, this site has evolved and now includes articles that help those people learn how to assess their risks properly and evaluate websites more accurately.

Those articles coupled with the auction analysis presented here will give you a coherent guide to learning how to buy and sell websites.

The Auction Analysis Format

This site presents my opinions of auctions I found interesting. Each assessment will adhere to the same format each time. I'll include a link to the auction on Sitepoint, I'll explain My Thoughts and then I'll include a transcription of the auction details. The only reason for including the auction details here in addition to the link is that if a site doesn't get sold, the listing is mysteriously removed. Sites sold successfully remain (greyed out) for all to see. I imagine this gives the impression that in Sitepoint's marketplace, all sites get sold.

My aim is to present articles that are both entertaining and informative. If you learn something and have a chuckle at the same time, then I've accomplished my mission.

Who Am I?

Just somebody who cares about you. Yes I do. I'm not associated with Sitepoint in any way, other than being a member of their very good webmaster forum. The opinions expressed here are my own.
