Thanks Matt! You can do a basic assessment of Google traffic using something like SEMRush. I like that tool as it shows you not only a rough idea of how much traffic from Google a site is getting, but it also shows you the keywords that are bringing searchers to the site.

Hi Matt

I tend to write my content from scratch, but get a rough guide from what the content used to be about from the Wayback Machine. Often the WBM doesn't have a record of the page in question, but you can usually get a clue about what content you should create based on the page name (how-to-cook-pasta.html, for example), or from the linking pages.

I agree with you that using Wayback to take someone's old content is illegal. I'm pretty new to expired domain name buying so I've been wondering about exactly this kind of thing.

Can I ask what you do to come up with content for that traffic still coming to the expired domain? How closely do you relate your content to the prior owner's content? Do you ask permission to use the prior owner's content, or do you create your own?

I appreciate any nuggets of wisdom you may be able to give! Thanks! :

Fantastic article! I've been reading many of your articles today, and want to say thanks for all the good info you've given out. I'm a little confused on one point, and that's regarding traffic analysis on expired domains. Is this even possible, or can you only do traffic analysis on a complete website that you've purchased? This may seem like a ridiculously simple question to you, so please understand that I'm new to all this! Thanks! :)

LOL - so that was you!! :)

If I'd known what your high bid was, maybe I would have tried harder hmmmm...

You also have good taste in domain names, because the one you got is a real humdinger. Good luck with that, I'm sure you'll do well with it.
