My Thoughts

I like this one a lot. It's got 41 posts and the quality of the posts is quite high. Unique, high quality content is hard to come by at an affordable price. If you just crunch the numbers, you can see that if this site sells for $410, the buyer is getting good articles for $10 a pop. That's good value just from a content procurement point of view.

The site is on a WordPress blog, which makes updating the content a breeze. But this is a double edged sword. It's on a blog, so that means regular updates. Regular updates mean regular work. This is the 4 letter work we want to avoid. The buyer would have to update the blog themselves (a cost) or hire someone else to do it. The cost here is incurred either by hiring a content writer or buying ridiculous generic content (think PLR).

The theme is nice and clean and normally I would be inclined to leave it as it is. However, I recently bought a developer's license to use the stylish WordPress themes that Woo Themes create. This means I can slap a (more) professional looking theme on it at no extra cost to me. Of course the buyer would have his or her own resources available to them.

But let's delve deeper. Look at the topic the blog explores. It's all about Adobe Dreamweaver. Look at the date. At the time of writing, it's October 22nd 2008. Dreamweaver CS4 shipped on October 15th. That's significant. This is an established blog about something that is going to be a 'hot topic'. This has value.

So far the adsense revenue, which is minimal, hasn't entered the equation. What I'm seeing is potential. As many website valuations use revenue as their basis, the negligible adsense revenue could be to the buyer's advantage. Maybe it's already set the seller's expectations low. Maybe bidders will be deterred from going high with their bids.

After examining the traffic stats, I'm a little concerned that there is just one search phrase and many variations on it that are bringing in the organic search engine traffic. The search engine traffic accounts for 76% of all the traffic the site gets. It's a one trick pony. Basically, there are 2 pages on this site that are getting all the traffic. The other 39 posts are good, but they don't contribute much to the site's overall traffic. Any scurrilous potential buyers who saw those enlightening traffic stats (and search phrases) might be tempted to create a new site targeting those phrases.

But... the site is currently getting 8,000 unique visitors a month and only scraping maybe $20 / month. I think this is because the kind of techy people who are visiting this site are not as click happy as, say, the Myspace crowd. So it's probably not worth the trouble to create a similar site if the potential adsense revenue is so small.

I'm bidding.

Update 24/10/2008

Ha! My paltry bid was blown out of the water by a BIN bid at $1,000. Lesson: if you see something good, and really want it, don't wait around hoping nobody will outbid you. Buy it if you think it's worth it. Ho hum. It would be interesting to see whether the buyer could improve those revenue figures.
