If you've spent any time on Flippa, or any website auction marketplace for that matter, you know that filthy scammers are everywhere. Here's a brief summary of the dirty dealings they engage in:
- Lie. That's right, they will lie about their sites. Sometimes they don't know they're lying, but they're lying, nonetheless. Maybe they think that "hits" are unique visitors (they aren't!) or they don't realise that the time they spend running their site is a cost and don't account for it in their financial details.
- They'll photoshop their revenue and traffic stats.
- They'll hide their sources of traffic. Who wants to have to create a constant stream of "linkbait" just to get traffic from StumbleUpon?
- They pay for traffic but don't declare it. Traffic can be bought via advertising on other sites.
- They will delete incriminating comments that astute bidders leave in their auctions, so as not to alert other bidders to the perils of buying their site.
- They will reply to deleted comments in a way that implies that the commenter was being unreasonable in some way.
- They will present projections of figures in place of real, true values. "Oh, sorry, you mean I can't present my projection of 10,000 uniques per month as fact, even though my site's only getting 200?". No you can't!
- They will make "typing errors" when detailing their stats - but won't amend their auction description to match the truth.
To tell the truth, I'm sick of it. The fact that comments pointing out sellers' lies and deception get deleted has led to me to create Danger Corner. In Danger Corner, I'll list the auctions that you need to be wary of because there is some hidden danger lurking there.
