SEO In The Wrong Hands
I just happened on an interesting work at home based business blog 5 minutes ago. I was so intrigued by a sig link on Sitepoint that I followed it. The post I looked at was interesting for what the author is trying to achieve, not for how good the content is.
Check out the post here (I know how to shorten URLs now I've discovered Twitter).
Yes, their content may be working for them on an SEO level, but who in their right mind is going to be engaged by it? Does it help the reader that the keywords are repeated so often? Unless you are a goldfish, I'm guessing that no it doesn't. But I'll wager that this blogger isn't interested in reader engagement, only traffic numbers. In fact, my hunch is that this blog is destined for the Flippa masses once traffic levels have reached the point where this site will seem like a Good Buy to Flippa's target audience. Flippa's target audience is not too bright and will probably be impressed by big numbers, regardless of what they represent.
Now, I'm no work at home based business online money opportunity expert, but I read that post and came away... none the wiser. It's the perfect example of SEO crafted uselessness. A few words of common sense (common because everybody already knows it) padded out to a whopping 1159 words - just so many words to stop the keywords running together.
I know, let's run some diagnostics on the content of that article, just for a laugh. Have you checked out Wordle? It's ace. Look at what sense Wordle makes of the words on the page:
All the important words are there! It seems that Wordle thinks this is a work based home money business. Result!
The blogger has missed a golden opportunity, though. They haven't stuffed their keywords into the alt attribute of every image on the page. OK, there aren't any images in the post, but that's SEO newbs for you.
LOL check out the "test" comment the author posted:
This is just a test to see if I can comment on my own make money at home blog. By the way self, I think you provide excellent work at home information. Maybe now I should get back to building my home based business. Talk to you soon (right now).
Even the "test" comments are riddled with keywords!
For comparison's sake I thought I'd run the same Wordle tag clouding on what I wrote in this post. The scores are in:
As you can see there is a more even distribution of words: frequency of use for each word is not determined by my SEO goals. Maybe it's more interesting to read if you're not a goldfish. Not wishing to discriminate against goldfish, of course.
Please note that these meanderings are not intended to make fun of the author, only what they have done. I'm sure the author is very nice, and if his comments on Sitepoint are anything to go by, he is.
This post was published for a laugh. No mindless bloggers were harmed during it's writing.

Wordle is a cool little tool, I’d never heard of it until I read your post. I love the way you used it to ‘run diagnostics’ on the post in question, lol! The test comment just takes the cake!
Keep the laughs coming.
Glad you like it Michelle. I only discovered it the other day and I thought it would be good to add it to the arsenal!
